Resumen:
Mechanical ventilation (MV) is crucial in the recoveryof patients with severe respiratory failure. The expiratoryphase, in particular, presents specific dynamic complexities. Inthis context, control systems represent fundamental componentsfor the adequate performance of MV systems. However, traditionalcontrol approaches employed in the literature have limitationsin addressing these complexities and ensuring accurateperformance. This article addresses the challenges associated withcontrolling the expiratory stage in MV systems through a robustand effective solution based on sliding mode control. In particular, the proposed control approach in this article is based on anon-linear model recently validated in the literature. Thus, theobjective is to overcome the limitations of traditional approachesand provide a robust and efficient control solution that overcomesthe solutions available in the literature. The results show thepotential of this control strategy in real clinical settings. Thesliding mode control approach improves the performance andconvergence of MV systems, contributing to more effectiveventilation therapy and better patient recovery.
