Resumen:
Keeping the blood glucose levels within thesafe range during meals and exercise still represents amajor hurdle not only for patients with type 1 diabetes(T1D), but also for Artificial Pancreas (AP) systems. Oneof the reasons a fully (autonomous) closed-loop solutionhas not been released onto the market yet is the slowaction of current insulin analogs. To partially overcome thislimitation, the authors have previously designed a switchedcontrol strategy equipped with an insulin-on-board (IOB)safety loop that mitigates meal-related glucose excursionswithout carbohydrate counting. In this paper, a similar strat-egy based on a Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) control lawhas been adapted to safely handle also exercise challengeswith minimum user intervention. In silico results using theUVA/Padova simulator evidence that the proposed closed-loop scheme is feasible under moderate-intense exercisebouts by effectively and safely reducing the risk of hypo-glycemia.
