Resumen:
This paper portrays how secondary schooling is experienced by two middle class girls, Maria and Patricia (15 and 17 years old) who attended third school year at the Normal and Liceo[1] in 2004. I am interested in tracing how they interpreted secondary education and how they saw their respective schools. Maria and Patricia’s experiences will illustrate some themes that appear to be relevant to a wider population of students in these two schools. This paper is the first analytical attempt to make sense of some of the data collected in my research about identity, subjectivity and schooling in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. During 2004, I carried out a qualitative study that encompassed different techniques for collecting data such as participant observation and photo-elicitation interviews. [1] Normal and Liceo refer to two different historical types of secondary schooling. These schools currently offer practically the same curriculum during the first three school years.
