Resumen:
Maize is one of the most important crops in the world. In this sense, corn surveillance is a very important field. The planthopper Delphacodes kuscheli, is the main vector of the Mal de Rio Cuarto virus, an important corn disease in Argentina. This work aimed to determine the insect preference between four different maize hybrids and the probing behavior in two contrasting hybrids. Non-inoculative adult females had access to hybrids DK390, DK670, DK79-10, and DK72-10 for the preference part, and DK670, DK72-10, and oat were used for the probing behavior experiments. Here we showed that D. kuscheli had a preference for DK72-10 over other hybrids. The test of probing behavior demonstrated that D. kuscheli had problems attaining phloem ingestion, constituting a mechanism of plant resistance to this insect species. These results are useful information to characterize maize hybrids resistance to D. kuscheli and consequently to Mal de Rio Cuarto disease.
