Resumen:
The combination of late sown and low planting density in maize has been adopted in restrictive environments. However, little is known about the most suitable genotype for these environments, which would promote the production of more than one fertile ear per shoot (prolificacy) and/or ears from secondary shoots (tillers). The existence of genotypic variability in these attributes is one of the most important aspects to start a breeding program. The objective of this work was to analyze the variability of traits related to vegetative-reproductive plasticity in a group of inbred lines from INTA Pergamino. For this, two late sown field trials were carried out with 13 inbreds at a planting density of 2 plants m-2. Phenotypic variability for grain filled ears per plant was observed among inbreds, finding prolific and prolific-tillering genotypes. Grain yield and grain number also varied among inbreds, being these attributes lower in the second experimental year due to unfavorable environmental conditions. This data demonstrates the presence of phenotypic variability in vegetative-reproductive traits, suggesting the importance of gene control studies of these mechanisms.
