Resumen:
•Research into the physiological and pathophys-iological processes concerning the centralnervous system (CNS) fundamentally relies inanalyses of structure-function relationships atthe single cell level and studies of anatomicalconnectivity at the neural network level.•Cellular morphological studies are betterperformed when a sufficiently sparse labellingof whole arborizations is obtained. However, methods such as Golgi staining can impedefurther neurochemical analyses.•For studies of neuroanatomical connectivity, conventional or viral tracers are usually used.Nevertheless, it can prove difficult to obtainthorough information regarding the morphologyof the cellular elements receiving these projec-tions.•In vivo noninvasive sparse fluorescent labelingcan be adequately combined with fluorescenttracers and immunofluorescent stainings for acomprehensive study of morphology, connec-tivity and neurochemistry.
