Resumen:
Water scarcity constitutes one of the main constraints of cropsproduction on a global scale. In order to generate information to guidesorghum genotype selection for biomass production in water limitedenvironments, a field trial was carried out in Balcarce, Argentina in2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons. Biomass (no grain) and grain sorghumhybrids were grown under two water regimens (rain-fed and irrigation) andtotal biomass yield, anatomical fractions (stem, leaf and panicle) and waterproductivity were determined. Biomass sorghum presented higher biomassyield than grain hybrid disregarding water regimen. However, biomasssorghum yield was reduced with lower water availability while no such effectwas observed in grain hybrid. Also, panicle yield and so harvest index wereenhanced in grain hybrid under rain-fed regimen. Water productivity washigher under rain-fed regimen in both seasons and for each water regimenwas higher for biomass sorghum than grain hybrid. Biomass sorghum hybridsallow to maximize biomass production per unit of available water, thus arecrops of choice in water limited environments.
