Non toxic effect of Smallanthus sonchifolius leafs and its main acyive componund, enhydrin

In our laboratory we fond that enhydrin, the high yielding chemical constituent of yacon leaves, decreses blood glucose levesl at minimun dose of 0.8 mg/hg body weight . In vitro citotoxicity assays were used as screening test. The disadvantage of this teste is that the homeostatic mechanisms and pathways fonuds in animals are not presents. In vivo studies in rats demonstrated    that enhydrin is safe in the therapeutic  dose range (0.8-8,0 mg/kg b.w.)
