The mechanistic philosophy is the mainstream intelectual movement in philosophy of neuroscience since 2000. There are several kinds of mechanistic theses. We have distinguished ontological, epistemic, semantic, and historiographical varieties of mechanism. It is important to distinguish among them, because they are independent from each other. The mechanistic framework needs some refinement concerning the idea of a "mosaic unity" of neuroscience. It seems to be a metaphor in search of a theory.
