Resumen:
Understanding the role of marine mammals in marine ecosystems is important because itprovides a context within which to assess the potential impact of their depredation on preypopulations and the structure of communities and the impact due to variation in preypopulations for harvesting issues by human or environmental. This understanding in turncan help foster a rational discussion of the conservation and management of marinemammals. In this chapter we will discuss the role of marine mammals as superiorpredators and their role in marine ecosystems. The registry of marine mammals in theestuarial waters of Bahía Blanca and surrounding areas will also be presented. Given theimportance of the area for anthropic activities, the antecedents of the consequences of theexposure of these mammals to anthropogenic effects (pollutants, shipping traffic, fishing)and their potential in the local fauna will be reviewed globally.
