Resumen:
Aquatic systems are commonly contaminated by metals. In natural and constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment, macrophytes are the main living organisms that uptake and accumulate metals. This chapter describes macrophyte metal accumulation in wetlands constructed for effluent treatment and in natural wetlands that receive urban pollutants. The data exposed are referred to studies carried out at microcosms scale and studies of wetlands constructed at field scale for the treatment of industrial wastewaters. Studies focused on metal plant biomonitoring in natural wetlands were also included. These results contribute to the design and maintenance of these treatment systems and to the contaminant mitigation in natural wetlands.
