Resumen:
Carbohydrates are critical for the function of the human immune system and many immune receptors are carbohydrate-binding molecules, including selectins, sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectins (siglecs), C-type lectins and galectins. Carbohydrates drive and regulate many functions in innate and adaptive immune response. This chapter will detail the involvement and role of carbohydrates in immune function and modulation including selectin-mediated leukocyte trafficking, carbohydrate-mediated interactions driving signalling and immune response, the roles of ABO(H) and Lewis blood groups and siglecs in distinguishing self from non-self, and chemokine presentation by glycosaminoglycans. It will also focus on the involvement of carbohydrates in the adaptive immune response.
