Resumen:
This chapter presents an overview of the initiatives conducted in the last few years for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern, mostly pharmaceutically active compounds, through adsorption onto carbon-based materials and nano-materials. Main advances dealing with strategies towards contributing to the development of sustainable, highly efficient activated carbons for this purpose are first presented. Likewise, the feasibility of employing raw and modified biochar or char, namely the enriched solid product arising from pyrolysis of biomass and other wastes, as alternative cost-effective adsorbents of emerging contaminants is revised. Then, latest progresses targeted at the development of a novel family of advanced adsorbents based on carbon nanostructures, focusing on carbon nanotubes, graphene, and related nano-materials, for emerging contaminants removal are examined. By the end of the chapter, efforts devoted to the adsorption of emerging contaminants onto the abovementioned materials from complex water matrices, real aquatic environments and/or in continuous operation mode are considered in an attempt to approach to more realistic scenarios.
