Resumen:
This paper aims at analyzing two aspects associated with informality from a comparative point of view. The first one is the association between informality and income segmentation. The second one is the relationship between informality and poverty and, especially, the direct and indirect mechanisms through which this association is verified. Four Latin American countries whose labor informality is significantly different from each other in its size and characteristics were selected. On the one hand, Argentina and Chile whose informal sectors are relatively small in the Latin American context; on the other hand, Brazil and Peru, where the opposite is verified. Data used in this paper come from household surveys with the most recent available information.
