Kierkegaard's reception in South America is acomplex phenomenon that properly speaking could be called an oxymoron. Thefact that Kierkegaard's complete works have not been translated into Spanish yet  as well as the fragmentary character of the first translations, made it almost impossible to receive the Dane's ideas directly. The situation was not better for the Brazilians, who received Kierkegaard through Portuguese translations. In addition, both existentialist and theological readings of Kierkegaard contributed to leaving out alternative philosophical approaches. Fortunately, this scene has changed since the 1960s when Demetrio G. Rivero began his translation from the original Danish. However, we still lag behind other countries which have had proper translationsfor many years.
