Widespread in plains and mountains on both sides of the Andes, from northern Chile down Tierra del Fuego; in Argentina, they occur in the western and southern arid and semi-arid regions of the country. The chilla occurs in steppes, “pampas” (grassland) and “matorral” (scrublands). The generally inhabit plain and low mountains, but they have been reported to occur as high habitat.
