Resumen:
In the Atlantic coast, the populations were severely exploited during the XX century, and their sizes fell to less than 10% of their former values. The similar reduction in size of some colonies which for different reasons were not exploited suggests a strong demographic interrelation, at least in the Patagonian region. Although these populations currently have a notable growth, their numbers are still below those estimated in the past. The majority of the populations in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean are increasing, although the tendencies are not homogeneous. However, in contrast to what is observed on the Pacific coast, the population sizes do not show large inter-annual fluctuations.
