Resumen:
Pinnipeds evolved from terrestrial carnivore ancestors and their amphibious nature has required many adaptations to life both in the water and on land or ice.  In the course of their evolution they have retained certain terrestrial traits (such as giving birth on land) while having undergone many adaptations to aquatic existence (in particular, pelagic foraging).  They can live for long periods of time both in the ocean and on land. Pinnipeds are classified into three living families: Otariids (fur seals and sea lions); Phocids (seals and elephant seals), and Odobenids (walruses).   En relación a este capítulo, ver adjunto: DeMaster, D.P. 2002.
