Whether Catholic or Protestant, for ordinary Christians, one of the devil?s more troubling powers was the apparent ability to enter people?s lives and at times, even their bodies. As such, ridding them of the demonic presence became an all encompassing endeavour. Remedies for doing so were determined by confessional specificities, intellectual and material resources and the urgency of the situation, as shaped by concurrent developments in law and medicine. This chapter surveys incidences of possession and the range of approaches to expelling the demonic, and asks how these approaches shifted over time and in accordance with contextual knowledge about the devil and his powers.
