Resumen:
Sexual selection was proposed by Charles Darwin as an explanatory mechanism for the development of certain sexual traits, generally present in males as ornaments and armaments, that enhance reproductive success through competition for mating. Unlike natural selection, it is often interpreted that sexually selected traits decrease survival or the performance of individuals in other contexts than reproduction. In this chapter I intend to explore the role of sexual selection in the behavior of fiddler crabs and offer some examples in which the general hypothesis of a lower survival or performance of males compared to females is not fully supported. I believe that there is a need to understand more deeply how natural and sexual selection interactpre { font-family: "Courier New", monospace; font-size: 10pt; background: transparent }p { line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.25cm; background: transparent }
