Resumen:
The scrutiny over sexist manifestations in discourse and the search for a social change regarding gender equality were first addressed by feminists and activists at the end of the XXth Century, and have reached great interest in the last years. Not only feminist linguists have studied sexism in language since the 1970s, but also different social actors are promoting non-sexist discourses today. By recalling Linguistics traditional debates, this article explains the notion “Non-Sexist Discourse”. In the first place, a definition of “sexism” is provided. The starting point is that “sexism in language” lies in the ways speaking or writing (re)produce inequalities between men and women. Secondly, the main features of non-sexist language reforms are exposed, as well as a distinction between non-sexist and inclusive languages. Finally, a discursive approach is introduced in order to detail how sex and gender are related to discourse studies.
