Archaeology of Northwestern Argentinean Puna

This essay addresses the archaeology of a section of the South American highlands, known in Spanish as Puna or Altiplano, which extends from Peru to Northwest Argentina. Here we will focus in the portion that encompasses part of Northwestern Argentina. Although it is impossible to be exhaustive in the synthesis of the archaeology developed and currently at work in such a large area and in a such long period of time (archaeological research initiated in the beginnings of the twentieth century), we try here to give a brief account of the past and ongoing research carried out by Argentinescholars, mentioning the main sites, material evidence, and social processes under investigation.
