Resumen:
In this chapter, the reported works deal with the photooxidation of thioethers under homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions where preparative and mechanistic insights of the photooxidation reactions are described with some details and the coverage period of the original research articles is 2018 – 2022. The chapter is organised according to the way the photoreactions were performed: visible-light heterogeneous and homogeneous photo catalysis methodologies. The first section of the chapter is mainly organised according to the photocatalyst types (e.g., metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porphyrins MOFs (P-MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), conjugated microporous polymers (CMFs), porphyrin-based polymers (PIMs) and polyoxometalates (POMs)). MOFs and P-MOFs possess in their structures a wide variety of metals such as Zr, Bi, Ru, VO2+, In, Ag, Sn among others showing outstanding photocatalytic performances. The second section of the chapter outlines the photooxidation reactions of thioethers under visible–light photocatalysis, photoredox and photoorganocatalysis homogeneous methodologies. Thus, the first part deals with photoorganocatalysts such as triphenylamine derivatives, anthraquinone, carbazole derivatives, thioxanthone derivatives, pyrazinoporphyrins and riboflavin derivatives while the second part describes the photoreactions carried out with metal photocatalysts derived from ruthenium, iridium and platinum complexes. Along both sections, mechanistic insights are described involving the concomitant formation of singlet oxygen through triplet energy photosensitization pathway as well as formation of superoxide ion through electron transfer pathway.
