Resumen:
Occasionally, injury or trauma to the eye or head may cause a small tear in the retina. The tear allows vitreous fluid to seep through it, getting under the retina and peeling itaway like a bubble in wallpaper. Thus, when the retina suffers deleterious biologicalor structural changes, it may lead all the way to blindness. In this sense, when theretina detaches from the back wall of the eye due to concussion or a biologicalprocess, the sensory retinal tissue layer is separated from the underlying pigmentedepithelium, with accumulation of subretinal fluid. The animal studies and clinical trials in humans using the novel SPION-Fe3O4 basedretina reattachment procedure revealed that this new process may provide a revolutionary retina reattachment procedure. In addition, the extremely positive resultspresented in this chapter indicate the possibility of new potential applications usingSPION-Fe3O4 nanoparticles with surface biofunctionalization to enable molecularspecificity, thus providing a new platform for the treatment of retinal detachmentand other eye disorders.
