Regional cooperation before the COVID-19 crisis was in a dire state. The pandemic aggravated that situation and manifested the lack of leadership, willingness, and agreement for coordinated, rapid, and effective responses to face the crisis. Ideological polarisation among national governments and internal socio-political turmoil affected overlapping regional groupings badly. A global context marked by closed borders, interrupted supply chains, competition over vaccines, and a redefinition of leaderships and alliances added new complexities and opportunities to regional and international cooperation in South America.
