Resumen:
The global ascendancy that populism enjoys nowadays has resulted in the proliferation of comparative analyses about the diverse expressions that the phenomenon adopts in different national and regional contexts. In particular, the literature has paid attention to those areas that were shocked by the arrival of populist leaders to power: the USA and Europe. As a result, there has been an extensive focus on Western cases to detriment of other experiences in the global south, which are often reduced to footnotes of more significant developments. This article seeks to remedy such an imbalance in perspective by bringing the Latin American experience to the forefront of contemporary debates, arguing that there is much to learn from the long-term engagement of the region with populism.
