An experiment was carried out in an estuarine inlet of Lagoa dos Patos (Brazil), with the objetive of evaluating the efficiency of pen-culture in the growth and survival rates of Farfantepenaeus paulensis. The contribution of a low-cost ration was also studied. The experiment consisted of three culture periods of 20, 40 and 60 days each one, initiated on February 1, 1997. Every period received four treatments: R: pen-cages of 60 shrimps with a daily home-made ration; S: pen-cages of 60 shrimps without ration; E: pen-cages with neither shrimps nor ration; C: uncaged areas. In spite of the availability of natural food and the favorable environmental conditions for culture development, the natural production of the system sustained a final shrimp biomass of hardly 209 kg.ha-1. This value represented 19% of the production of F. paulensis supported in pen-cages where extra food was added (R = 1092 kg.ha-1). Furthermore, after 60 days shrimp biomass in R cages resulted in an individual mean of only 7,0 g and in a poor survival rate (26%). We conclude that a minor initial density, in agreement with the carring capacity of the system, and the adoption of a ration of superior nutrient quality it is advised.
