The transition from static to genetic phenomenology is usually explained either in terms of the transformation of the conception of time or in connection with the incompatibility between the notion of hyle as formless stuff and as organized in sensation fields. But there is still a third dimension of intentionality which is transferred from activity to passivity, namely the structure of fore- and background. In the static analysis the latter is, from the noematic point of view, a field of already constituted objects with no room for hyletic components. The aim of this paper is to show how the hyle is incorporated in the background. This takes place in four moments: in the first one, the background excludes hyletic data; in the second one, the possibility of a background formed by non-apprehended data is briefly discussed; in the third phase the background is taken as hyletic insofar the Ego is not attentionally directed to it; in the last moment the Hintergrund is explained in terms of a sensation field constituted through passive syntheses.
