Resumen:
This paper investigates the changes in upper andlower dental bite records that occur when theanterior teeth occlude into a three-dimensionalrather than a flat object. Methods: anterior biteregistrations were obtained from 20 volunteerswith full and unrestored dentitions. As a threedimensional,life-like bite target we cast a siliconereplica from the impression of an actual arm, fitted with a rigid bony interior. Each participantwas asked to bite into a single layer of softenedbite registration wax wrapped around the samelocation on the fake arm, as well as into a flatwafer of the same material. Upper and lower biteregistrations were then scanned in the samelocation on a flat bed scanner. We analysed thesizes of the different bite marks by means oflandmark- and semi-landmark analysis tocalculate Procrustes distances between toothoutlines. In order to analyse shape variationbetween the two types of bite registration wecarried out principal components analyses on thepartial warp scores. These were derived frompartial Procrustes coordinates aligned by meansof thin-plate spline decomposition based on abending energy matrix. Our results show that there are significantdifferences in the shape of the upper or lowerteeth when they occlude into a flat or threedimensionaltarget. We conclude that the use of a traditional flat biteregistration in human bitemark reconstruction andanalysis has to be seriously questioned.(J Forensic Odontostomatol 2009;27:1:
