Resumen:
This study was aimed at determining the salinity (0.1, 1 or 5 ppt) that optimise femalereproductive performance and the combination of salinity (0.1, 1 or 5 ppt) and dietregime (Artemia salina nauplii or Tetracolor®) that optimise larval development in thecaridean shrimp Palaemon argentinus. The incubation period and fecundity weresimilar among salinities. The number of survival days, number of moults andpercentage of zoeas that moulted two, three and four times were higher whenembryogenesis occurred at 5 ppt and when larvae were exposed to 5 ppt. In addition, larval performance was better when fed Artemia nauplii than Tetracolor®. Overall, these results probably reflect the energetic costs associated with osmoregulation and thepoorer nutritional quality or lower digestibility of Tetracolor®. We conclude that asalinity of 5 ppt combined with a diet consisting of live food is optimum for the cultureof the first larval stages.
