Resumen:
It is widely known in lowland archeology the presence of earth mound buildings erected and occupied by Holocene populations. In the basin of the Rio de la Plata there are profuse inquiries regarding this archaeological phenomenon, referred in the literature as tumulus, cerritos, hills, aterros or monticular structures. In nineteenth century academic literature about Parana River Delta archaeology they are known as tumuli, which refers to anthropogenic elevations containing human burials. However, during the first decades of the twentieth century the genesis of these structures was discussed and they were generally considered as natural landforms that were strategically occupied and / or used as burial areas for Hispanic populations. This debate is still active in the Paraná Delta archaeology. The geoarchaeological approaches undertaken since 2008 in the Upper Paraná Delta allows us to propose the existence of a construction engineering generated by the populations that occupied the area during the late Holocene. In this paper we present the results of these investigations, which made it possible to recognize constructive options, discuss evolutionary and functional aspects, and contribute to the knowledge of the supra - regional variability of earth mounds.
