We can be fascinated by the beauty that plants offer to our senses in theircolours, shapes, scents and textures. The machinery that plants use toacquire the functions that build up these features and adjust them to thechallenges of the environment bears a different but no less fascinatingbeauty. The static and almost naive external image of plants is backed by aremarkable network of intricate connections, extremely sophisticated mechanisms of cell signalling and gene control; a level of complexity that we arestill far from understanding in many respects. Yet, we are steadily walkinginto the achievement of that knowledge as revealed by this issue of CurrentOpinion in Plant Biology
