Providingbenchmarkdataofthethermalandmetallographicparametersduringthecolumnar-to-equiaxedtransition(CET)inawiderangeofalloyconcentrationsisoffundamentalimportanceforunderstandingthisphenomenonaswellasformetallurgicalandmodelingpurposes.Theaimofthisstudywastoinvestigatethecolumnar-to-equiaxedtransition(CET)inaluminum–copperalloysofdifferentcompositionscoveringawiderangefrom2to33.2wt%Cu(eutecticcomposition),whichweredirectionallysolidifiedfromachillface.Thethermalparametersstudiedincludedrecalescence,coolingrates, temperaturegradientsandinterphasevelocities.WefoundthatthetemperaturegradientandvelocityoftheliquidusinterphasereachedcriticalvaluesattheCET;thesecriticalvalueswerebetween0.44 and0.09K/mmandbetween0.67and2.16mm/s,respectively.Themetallographicparametersanalyzedweregrainsize,primaryandsecondarydendriticarmspacingandalsoeutecticspacing.Theresults obtainedwerecomparedwithpreviousexperimentalstudies,publishedpredictionsandmodelsof theCETforsimilaralloys.
