Resumen:
Studies of meiotic configurations of colchicine treated and untreated Zea diploperennis ( AdAd BdBd) and two F, synthetic Z. diploperennis x Z. perennis hybrids (2n = 30, ApAp’Ad BplBpZBd and 2n = 40, ApAp’AdAd Bpl Bp2BdBd) were made. Pre-zygotene colchicine treatment produces an increase in the frequency of multivalents (trivalents and quadrivalents respectively) in the F, hybrids, but hexavalents or octovalents were not observed. However, in several stems of Z. diploperennis treated with colchicine, quadrivalent formation was not observed. These results suggest that there are homoeologies within the A and B genomes, but little if any homoeology between them. Colchicine treatment may disrupt a bivalent promoting mechanism, probably due to the presence of Ph-like genes, thus revealing cryptic genome homologies.
