Resumen:
Analysis of published data on the distribution of Recent radiolarians in various climatic and oceanographic zones indicates that their tapho- and orictocoenoses are chiefly originated by biocoenoses which inhabited the upper water layers (0-500 m). Several aspects of radiolarian biology, ecology and taphonomy are discussed and the conclusion is reached that members of this group cannot be regarded as inequivocal indicators of oceanic deep-water conditions.
