Resumen:
Although the description of the first members of the CTX-M-family was achieved in Europe, they had been widely distributed in South America at least since 1989, being their explosive dissemination reported by three different groups of researchers. Since then, the presence of the CTX-M â-lactamases has been demonstrated in different microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli, Shigella sonnei, Proteus mirabilis, Morganella morganii, Salmonella enterica, Vibrio cholerae and Aeromonas hydrophyla, among others. Discussions on the ability of different susceptibility testings on the detection of these enzymes, along with a straightforward recommendation for changing the interpretation of NCCLS breakpoints, have also been addressed.
