The concept of food sovereignty is becoming an element of everyday parlance indevelopment politics and food justice advocacy. Yet to gain widespread civil societyacceptance the idea of food sovereignty and its demands have to be able to coexistwith already well-anchored principles of consumer sovereignty. The aim of this article isto examine the different sets of demands that the two ideals of sovereignty bring about,analyse in how far these different demands can be made compatible with each otherand explain why consumers have to adjust their food demands to seasonal productionvariability to promote food sovereignty and so secure future autonomy.
