Exploring the quantum vacuum with cylinders

We review recent work on the Casimir interaction energy between cylindricalshells. We include proposals for future experiments involving cylinders, suchas a null experiment using quasi-concentric cylinders, a cylinder in front of aconducting plate and a cylindrical version of the rack and pinion powered byCasimir lateral force. We also present an exact formula for the theoreticalevaluation of the vacuum interaction energy between eccentric cylindricalshells, and describe improved analytical and numerical evaluations for theparticular case of concentric cylinders.
