AbstractThe objective of this work was to assess the impact of the land use and management change onsoil quality, by means of resource state indicators in the southwest region of Córdoba province,Argentina. Sampling sites are representative of most common land uses and management in theregion. Also reference sites, close to the natural condition, were analysed. Soil properties selected as indicators were Organic carbon (CO), pH, bulk density, mechanical resistance, infiltration rate, water stable aggregates and A layer depth. A soil quality index resulting from the average of the normalized variables was used to assess the impact. Maximum and minimum values for each variable were established in the bases of theoretical criteria and considering the values of the variables in the reference sites. Organic carbon, infiltration rate, water stable aggregates and A layer depth were the more significant indicators. Organic carbon showed an 80% lost respect to the reference conditions and was the indicator with more aggregation degree. Infiltration rate and water stable aggregates, both depending on organic carbon, showed a diminution near to 70% respect to the reference condition.
