Resumen:
Natural gas is recognised as the cleanest fossil fuel for space heating. However, being a non-renewable resource it must be used in the most efficient possible way; moreover, in those countries where the depletion of reserves has been already documented. In a previous study on individual balanced-flue space heaters, we have identified several design characteristics that lead to low thermal efficiency (40 to 60%). These types of heaters are the most commonly used in Argentina. In the present work, we have developed a prototype and investigated various improvements on the design. Better thermal radiation, enhanced indoor air convection, and chimney flow regulation were achieved by simple and low cost modifications made on a commercial model. Thermal efficiencies in the range of 75% to 85% were obtained, which represents up to 100% improvement. The specific cost of the heater per useful power delivered was reduced, and other heating performances were improved, like room temperature homogeneity and air-room desiccation. Considering the large market presence of these furnaces in the residential and commercial sectors in Argentina, the resulting savings in gas consumption and environmental emissions are found to be very significant.
