Resumen:
ABSTRACT An 4 week feeding trial was conducted to determine the effects of different amounts of vitamin E of the argentine shrimp Pleoticus muelleri, using semi purified diets. Duplicate groups of seven shrimps ranging from 4,36 to 4,50 g mean weight, were stocked in each aquarium, diets with 0; 100; 600 and 1500 mg vitamin E/kg diet and 16 mg BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)/Kg, were provided. At the end of the fourth week trial, the percent weight gain of the shrimps fed various diets ranged from 22,2% to 31,6% for all treatments with no significant differences. Shrimps had survivals between 43 and 64% with no significant differences among treatments. The animals fed diet having the synthetic antioxidant, BHT, have no differences in growth and survival related those to which supplemented vitamin E was given. No evidence for the vitamin E requirement by the shrimp (P. muelleri) was observed under the conditions of this experiment and for the levels of vitamin E tested.
