Resumen:
ABSTRACT. We present a preliminary assessment of problem solving, as an estimate of behavioral innovation and learning abilities of a generalist and abundant raptor, M. chimango, in controlled conditions. The experimental tests consisted in the presentation of a Plexiglas box with four lids which led to isolated pieces of meat. We recorded latencies to the first contact with the box, and latencies from this first contact to access the pieces of food. In addition we registered the number of attempts to open the box and reach the first portion of meat, and the total number of lids opened by each individual. Our results indicate that M. chimango has a remarkable ability to obtain food from a new apparatus, an observation that agrees with anecdotic reports on opening of recipients to obtain food in urbanized environments. The results support the idea of behavioral plasticity in this species.
