This paper examines tha paralogisms of pure reason and distinguishes between two lines of argumentation. One stresses the difference between phenomenon and noumenon, and the impossibility of elaborating a non empirical theory on the soul. The other establishes a differentiation, within the phenomenal world, between the way in which categories can be applied to the self as object of inner sense, and the way in which they can be applied to physical objects. The second problem appears as a non thematized background which leads to the problem of the relationship holding between psychological identity and numerical identity through the time of our body as a physical object. The article deals with the first line of argumentation.
