At Cape
Lamas, southern Seymour Island, the Maastrichtian part of the López de
Bertodano Formation consists of large, lenticular bodies (up to 1 km in width
and 50 m in thickness) of heterolithic mudstones and sandy siltstones, with
multiple evidences of complex cut and fill structures, which are interpreted as
tide-influenced estuarine channels. It is shown that lack of recognition of
this complex lenticular geometry could result in erroneous interpretations of
the stratigraphic order, including the apparent stratigraphic inversion of
sedimentary bodies.
