Resumen:
Chromosome numbers and DNA content in four Patagonian species of the genus Berberis (Berberidaceae). The chromosome number of Berberis darwinii Hook. (2n=28) was confirmed, and that of B. parodii Job (2n=28) is reported for the first time. The karyotype of B. darwinii (12m+1sm+1st, with a macrosatellite in the long arm of a m pair) and of B. parodii (10m+2sm+2st, with a macrosatellite in the long arm of a sm pair) are illustrated, The populations of B. buxifolia Lam. and B. heterophylla Juss. analyzed were tetraploid (2n=56). The DNA content of the four species is reported and significant differences in total DNA content between diploid and tetraploid species were found (B. darwinii = 3.09±0.26 pg, B.parodii = 3.12±0.22 pg, B. buxifolia = 5.39±0.23 pg and B. heterophylla = 5.46±0.38 pg). The tetraploids showed significant differences with the diploids when the content of DNA per genome was considered. Key words: Berberis, chromosome number, cytogenetics, DNA content
