Resumen:
The influence of cAMP and theophylline on in vitro bulbing of Allium sativum L cv. Colorado is reported. Garlic explants were cultured in modified MS medium and the following treatments were applied to plantlets: i) 0, 0.1, 1 and 10 mM cAMP and ii) 0, 0.1, 1 and 10 mM cAMP + 1 mM theophylline. After 4 subcultures, 0.1 and 1mM cAMP induced the greater percentages of bulblets formed from the total number of explants: 80 and 40 %, without theophylline; and 70 and 72 %, with theophylline; respectively. Bulblet weight values were significatively different, reaching values of ca. 300 mg for 1 mM cAMP with and without theophylline; while control bulblets reached ca. 400 mg. Bulblet diameter increased with increasing concentrations of cAMP. We concluded that cAMP stimulates the bulblet formation and promotes an earlier dormancy stage. Accordingly with our results a strategie for bulbing in Allium sativum L. is proposed.
