A thorough systematic analysis is performed on the bivalve fauna of the Upper Paleozoic of the Tepuel-Genoa basin (Chubut province, Argentina), as a contributionto the knowledge of Early Permian faunas of Argentina. This first part comprises the families Nuculidae and Malletidae (in part); of which abundant well preserved specimens allowed the recognition of seven species. Two of these, Nuculopsis (Nuculopsis) teckaensis nov. sp. and Palaeoneilo gonzalezi nov. sp., are new species. Two new records, of Nuculopsis (Nuculopsis) sp. and Palaeoneilo sp. are included too. On the basis of new material from the Tepuel-Genoa Basin, the diagnoses of Nuculopsis (Nuculopsis) patagoniensis González and Nuculopsis (Nuculanella) camachoi González are emended. In addition, the descriptionsof these two previously known species and of Palaeoneilo amosi González are supplemented by new information and their geographical ranges are expanded. Detailed comparisons of these species with taxa from other regions are also provided.
