Resumen:
Lucan´s Bellum Ciuile presents an impious war founded on an unusual identification of ciues and hostes according to a reversal of moral and political values of traditional Roman society. The mass suicide in the Vulteius episode (B.C. 4, 465-581) shows several confusions and distortions of ethical and generic meanings of uirtus. The double ambiguity of moral and epic categories is related to a monstrous poetics. The lucanian text upsets both dimensions in order to display the subversions resulting from the transposition of historic discourse into epic world.
