Disentangling the taxonomic status of Ctenomys (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae) populations inhabiting northern areas of La Rioja Province, Argentina

Resumen:
The Ctenomys population from Anillaco, LaRioja Province, Argentina has been the subject of detailedstudies of circadian rhythms, vocalization, ecology andspatial dynamics. However, the taxonomy and systematicsof this population as well as populations of Ctenomysinhabiting Andean areas of this province is unknown. Inthis study, we present the phylogenetic relationship of the?Anillaco tuco-tuco? as well as of two other populations ofCtenomys, all distributed in the northern portion of La RiojaProvince, Argentina. Based on molecular analyses andmorphological comparisons, we reached to the conclusionthat the ?Anillaco tuco-tuco? population corresponds tothe species Ctenomys famosus. In addition, an undescribedspecies, member of the ?mendocinus? lineage of Ctenomys,is recognized in the Andean portions of the province.
