Cooperation modes

Scientific Visits Programme

Programme to promote the contact between researchers with the objective of exploring new possibilities of cooperation and/or developing joint research projects. Scientific visits are considered as a first step towards cooperation. The programme has two funding methods which can vary according to the agreements established with the counterparts:

a. Funding of travel and stays for the Argentinian researcher to the counterpart country

b. Funding of travel for the Argentinian investigator and stays for the counterpart researcher.

Time frame: from 21 days up to 3 months, according to the conditions agreed with the counterpart.

In 2013, there are open calls with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), the Slovak Academy of Science (SAS), the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science and the Czech Republic Academy of Science.

Bilateral Cooperation Programme – Level I:

Programme for financing biannual investigation projects to be done jointly with foreign institutions.

In the frame of these projects, there are trips and stays in the counterpart institute financed for the Argentinian or foreign researcher. In the same way, supplies and minor equipment are also financed. The amount of the annual funding varies slightly depending on the counterpart country (approx. Arg. $50.000 annually).

The Project presentations are done in the framework of annual calls previously arranged with the respective counterparts. Projects must be presented in both institutions and its funding requires the approval of both parties.

Calls for 2013 will be performed with the following institutions: the German Academy of Science (DFG), the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the National Fund for Scientific Research of Belgium (FNRS), the São Paulo Research Foundation(FAPESP), the Foundation for the Support of Research of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ), the Slovak Science Academy (SAS), the National Institute of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Science and Technology Council of Mexico (CONACYT), the Czech Republic Academy of Science (AVCR) and the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII) from Uruguay.

Bilateral Cooperation Programme – Level II:

Programmes for Funding triennial cooperation projects regarding specific topics which are executed with foreign institutions. The areas are defined jointly with the counterpart and are in direct response to the interests of both institutions.

Within the framework of each project, CONICET finances trips and stays for researcher in the counterpart country, stays for doctoral and postdoctoral fellows in the counterpart institution as well as supplies and minor equipment. The annual amount for funding varies depending on the counterpart (approx. Arg. $80.000 annually).

Calls for 2013 will cover the following topics: Geosciences, Glaciology and Oceanography, Environment, Desertification, Fundamental Physics and Related Technologies, High Energy Physics, Information and Communications Technology, Computational Modelling, Agriculture, Food Technology, Genomics, Clean Technologies, Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources, Risk and Social Vulnerabilities for Natural and Environmental Events, Gender Studies, Educational Sciences.

International Research Groups (GII)

These are associations between researchers from one or more national institutions with one or more foreign institutions to perform joint research programmes with two elements: research projects and training of doctors and young investigators.

As part of GII, interdisciplinary networks are created on a national and international level. GII consist of a minimum of 4 projects of national investigation that are carried out with various international groups. Projects are framed within common problems and seek a common goal.

GII presentations are made within the framework of a permanent call. For GII approval, both the projects and the framework in which they are enclosed are taken into account.

GII are established for a term of 4 years, with the possibility of a two-year extension. Annual funding depends on the number of groups that it comprises, with an estimated budget of Arg. $100.000 for each group. These funds are directed at travel, researchers and fellows’ stays (up to 6 months per year) in the counterpart institution and supplies.

Funding from the foreign counterpart may come from their own resources or third institutions with similar programs. For example, Germany: DFG: Research Training Groups, France: CNRS Groupement de Recherche International, Chile: CONICyT: International Networking.

The submissions are governed by the requirements of CONICET and the participating institutions.

Contact should be made with the area of International Cooperation before submitting a GII (coopint@conicet.gov.ar)

Stays of Foreign Researchers and/or Experts in Argentina

This programme offers scholarships of 3 to12 months for stays in the Research Units of CONICET for preferably young researchers and/or experts, in areas of strategic priority, geographical spread, regional and/or thematic interest that result in a direct benefit for the institution.

Foreign experts and/or researchers are paid the aeroplane fare and an annual stipend equivalent to the category they would have if they were part of CONICET’s Researchers Career.

Associated International Laboratories (LIA)

These are research institutes with at least two locations, one in Argentina and the other one in the counterpart country, which seek through association to deepen and consolidate a pre-existing and fruitful scientific cooperation bond.

In order to access this tool it is necessary to have participated in an Exchange Scientific – Academic Programme, to have a history of continuous cooperation and to own several co-publications. Although those who meet these requirements may indicate their desire to establish a laboratory of this kind, the drivers of the initiative will be CONICET and its international counterpart.

The contributions of CONICET and the counterpart are similar and are intended for operation, scientific exchanges, joint theses supervision, seminars and workshops.

Currently, the following Bilateral Laboratories are in operation:

  • Physics and Fluid Mechanics (with France)
  • Molecular Vectors (with France)
  • Computer Science, Logic, Languages, Verification and Systems (with France)
  • Nanoscience (with France)

International Research Centres

They are co-managed units with foreign institutions. This co-management includes governance, planning and joint funding. International Centres are physically established in Argentina and seek to be areas of national and international reference in their discipline, topic or application field. For that reason they are evaluated jointly between CONICET and the international counterpart.

Currently, the following Bilateral Investigation Centres are in operation:

  • Structural Biology and Neurobiology (with Max Planck Society, Germany)
  • Climate and its Impacts (France)
  • Simulation, Modelling and Computational Visualization (France)
